Downtown Austin parking can feel like a puzzle, especially if you're new to the city or haven't been in a while. The good news: once you know the system, it's actually pretty manageable. The bad news: a lot of people don't know the system and end up circling Congress Avenue for 20 minutes when there's a perfectly good garage two blocks off the main drag.

Here's everything you need to know.

Street Parking β€” Meter Rates and Hours

Austin uses demand-responsive pricing for street meters, which means rates change by block and time of day. In the core downtown area, expect to pay:

ZoneRateHours EnforcedTime Limit
Core (Congress, 6th-2nd)$1.50–$2.00/hrMon–Sat 8am–10pm2 hr
Downtown Fringe$1.00–$1.50/hrMon–Sat 8am–8pm2–4 hr
Near East (Rainey area)$0.75–$1.25/hrMon–Sat 8am–6pm4 hr
Extended Zone$0.50–$0.75/hrMon–Fri 8am–6pmVaries

You pay via the kiosks (look for the green boxes) or the Park ATX app. Credit cards work at all kiosks. Street parking enforcement is serious in downtown β€” don't let the meter expire.

Best Parking Garages Downtown

For anything longer than 2 hours, a garage is almost always the right call. You won't have to watch the clock, and the per-day max caps keep costs predictable.

Republic Square Garage (307 W 2nd St) Reserve on SpotHero β†’

One of the best-located garages downtown β€” right next to Republic Square Park, walkable to 6th Street, 2nd Street District, and the Convention Center. Rates hover around $2/hr with a $15 daily max on weekdays. Weeknight evenings it often fills up, so arrive before 7pm on Fridays.

City Hall Garage (301 W 2nd St) Reserve on SpotHero β†’

Another solid central option near Auditorium Shores and the 2nd Street District. $2/hr, $18 max. Slightly cheaper than convention center lots but the same neighborhood access. Open 24/7.

Austin Convention Center Garage (500 E Cesar Chavez) Reserve on SpotHero β†’

If you're going to the Convention Center for a show or convention, this is the obvious pick. Otherwise it's a little far east. $3/hr, $25 daily max. Expensive but validated if you're attending an event there.

Brazos & 6th Garage Reserve on SpotHero β†’

Right in the heart of the Warehouse District/entertainment zone. Evenings and weekends you'll often find flat rate deals for $10–15. Gets crowded after 9pm on weekends β€” try to arrive earlier and stay.

Austin Energy Garage (721 Barton Springs Rd) Reserve on SpotHero β†’

On the south side near Auditorium Shores β€” great for Lady Bird Lake events, Auditorium Shores concerts, and accessing the hike-and-bike trail. Usually cheaper than core downtown garages.

Free Parking Near Downtown

Yes, free parking exists near downtown Austin. It requires a short walk, but it's real.

East 2nd Street (past I-35)

Cross I-35 going east and you'll find free street parking on residential side streets. The walk to 6th Street is about 10–15 minutes. Not ideal late at night but perfectly fine during the day and early evening.

South of the River

The South Congress neighborhood has free street parking on residential streets south of Elizabeth Street. Uber or Bird/Lime scooter across the Congress Ave bridge gets you downtown in minutes.

Republic Park (north fringe)

Streets around Republic Park on the northern fringe of downtown have free, unrestricted parking during weekends. It's a 12–15 minute walk to 6th Street but can save you $15–20 on a Saturday night.

πŸ€™ Local Pro Tip

The blocks around 12th and Lavaca β€” north of the Capitol β€” often have free or cheap street parking even on busy evenings. It's a 15-minute walk down Congress to 6th Street, but Austin's flat and walkable. Many locals park up here specifically to avoid the downtown garage rates.

Downtown Parking by Area

Congress Avenue

Congress is the main spine of downtown and parking directly on it is extremely limited (mostly commercial loading zones). Target the side streets one block east and west β€” 2nd Ave and Brazos on the east, Lavaca and Guadalupe on the west. The garages on 2nd Street are your best bet for all-day parking while exploring this corridor.

2nd Street District

Austin's cleanest, most upscale entertainment corridor. Great restaurant row parking: Republic Square Garage is the go-to. Republic Square Park itself sometimes has free surface parking on weekends when it's not closed for events β€” check signage.

Warehouse District (4th & 5th)

Bars, clubs, and music venues clustered between 3rd and 5th Streets west of Congress. The Brazos/6th garage and surface lots on 4th Street are the main options. Expect $10–15 flat evenings on weekends. Arrive before 9pm and you'll always find something reasonable.

Near the Capitol

State government parking lots are closed to the public during business hours but some open for evening/weekend parking. Street parking on the Capitol grounds perimeter is available on weekends. The Capitol Visitors Center has a public lot on 11th and Trinity.

Weekday vs. Weekend Strategy

Weekdays: Garage rates are best before 9am and after 5pm. If you're here for business, many garages offer monthly passes ($150–250/month) that are a steal if you're commuting regularly.

Friday/Saturday nights: Plan to arrive by 8pm if you want street parking. After 9pm, the streets are full and garages are your only option. Budget $15–20 for parking and don't stress it β€” you'll spend more in gas and time circling than you'd save.

Sunday mornings: The best time to park downtown is Sunday morning. Meters are typically off (Austin honors major holidays and most Sundays are lightly enforced), garages are cheap, and the streets are quiet. Great for brunch crowds.

πŸ’‘ The Smartest Move for a Night Out

Book a SpotHero spot in advance for Friday or Saturday night. You'll lock in a rate (often $8–12) before the lots raise their prices to flat-rate $20 walk-up fees. Take 5 minutes before you leave the house and it'll save you both money and aggravation.

Parking Meter Holidays (No Enforcement)

Austin suspends meter enforcement on these dates β€” street parking is free all day:

Always verify with the City of Austin before assuming β€” policies occasionally change.

Reserve Parking in Advance

For busy nights, events, or just peace of mind, SpotHero lets you book a guaranteed spot in advance. Austin has strong coverage downtown with 50+ available garages and lots.
