6th Street is Austin's most famous (and most chaotic) entertainment corridor. On a Friday or Saturday night, the stretch between Lavaca and I-35 is packed with bars, live music, and the people who love them. Finding parking requires either a plan or a lot of patience.
Here's how locals do it.
The Honest Truth About 6th Street Parking
After 9pm on Friday and Saturday, street parking near 6th is essentially gone. I don't mean hard to find โ I mean gone. The surface lots and garages within two blocks will be full or charging flat rates of $20โ30. This isn't a secret; it's just the reality of one of the most visited entertainment districts in Texas.
The move is to either arrive early (before 8pm) and grab a meter, book a spot in advance, or park further out and walk/scoot. All three work great. Circling is the losing strategy.
Street Parking Near 6th Street
Street parking on 6th itself is metered and extremely limited. The adjacent streets are better:
- 5th and 7th Streets (east of Brazos): More meter availability than 6th itself. $1.50โ2.00/hr, enforced until 10pm MonโSat.
- Brazos, Red River, Trinity Streets: Side streets parallel to 6th often have open spots before 8pm. Same rate, same enforcement hours.
- East 6th (past I-35): The hipster stretch of East 6th has cheaper meters ($0.75โ1.00/hr) and more availability. It's a quick walk back west to the entertainment district.
Arrive before 7:30pm on Friday or Saturday and you'll find street parking within 2โ3 blocks of 6th. After 9pm, plan to pay for a garage or walk from further out. The window closes fast.

91 Red River (near Rainey Street crossover) Reserve on SpotHero โ
On the east side near where 6th meets Red River and the Rainey area begins. Often overlooked, usually has space, and puts you walking distance from both 6th Street bars and the Rainey bungalows. Solid option.
Parking East 6th vs. Classic 6th
Austin's bar scene has spread east, and East 6th (from I-35 to about Chicon) is now its own destination. If you're heading east:
- Street parking is significantly easier โ meters are cheaper and less contested
- Side streets (Navasota, Waller, Chicon area) have free parking on weekends
- The walk from a free spot to your destination is usually under 5 minutes
Park and Ride (The Smart Move)
Locals who go to 6th regularly often do this: park for free in a neighborhood slightly north or south, take a Bird/Lime scooter to the bar, and scooter back after. The scooter rides are $2โ4 each way. You save $15 on parking and add 3 minutes to your travel. The math is obvious.
Free parking neighborhoods within scooter distance:
- Hyde Park area (38th/Guadalupe): Free residential parking, ~1.5 miles north
- South Congress residential streets: Free, south of the river, scooter across the bridge
- East Austin (12th & Chestnut area): Free, 10-minute walk to East 6th
Park free on a residential street 1โ1.5 miles from 6th and Bird scooter in. Round trip is $4โ6. You'll save $10โ20 over garage rates and skip the post-night-out parking lot gridlock. This is genuinely what Austin regulars do.
What Not to Do
- Don't park in private lots without paying: The lots on 6th Street are aggressively enforced, especially on weekend nights. You WILL get towed. The tow fees start at $250 and the lot is not nearby.
- Don't assume residential streets near 6th are free: Streets within 4โ5 blocks of 6th often have permit-only restrictions. Read every sign before you walk away.
- Don't wait until 10pm to look for parking: By that point you're committed to paying whatever the garage wants.
Rideshare as a Parking Strategy
For a big night out โ multiple stops, late night, no designated driver situation โ Uber or Lyft from a park-and-ride spot on the edge of downtown is genuinely the best solution. Park free, pay $6โ10 each way for a rideshare, and don't worry about the whole thing. The total cost often beats downtown garage rates and eliminates parking stress completely.
Book in Advance
SpotHero has solid coverage near 6th Street. If you know you're going out Friday night, spend 3 minutes booking a spot Thursday evening. You'll lock in rates before surge pricing kicks in.
