The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) is one of Austin's biggest annual events, drawing 400,000+ people over race weekend. COTA is located about 15 miles southeast of downtown Austin on SH-130 and SH-71. The good news: the venue has extensive parking. The bad news: post-race exodus from 100,000+ people at the same time creates some of the worst traffic in Austin's calendar year.

Here's how to handle it intelligently.

COTA Official Parking Options

General Parking Lots (Lots 1–10)

COTA has extensive on-site parking across multiple numbered lots. General parking is typically $30–50 per day for race weekend, with prices higher for Saturday qualifying and Sunday race day. These lots are paved, well-managed, and close enough to the venue entrance for a 10–20 minute walk.

Premium Parking (Lots closer to main entrance)

Premium lots are $60–100+ for race day. These put you closest to the main gate and also exit faster post-race. If post-race traffic is your biggest concern, the premium lots closer to the exit road are worth the price premium — you could save 30–60 minutes leaving.

Preferred/VIP Parking

Various hospitality packages include premium parking. If you have paddock club or similar, your parking is usually handled — just follow the event-specific instructions in your ticket package.

🏎️ The F1 Parking Rule: Arrive Early, Leave Late

The post-race traffic out of COTA on Sunday is genuinely brutal — 2+ hour waits are normal if you try to leave right at the checkered flag. The pro move: arrive 2+ hours before your session, and stay 1–1.5 hours after the main event ends. Have dinner at the venue, watch the podium ceremony, explore the paddock area. Let the rush clear. You'll cut your exit wait from 2 hours to 20 minutes.

Shuttle Service to COTA

COTA operates official shuttle buses from several locations around Austin, including downtown hotels and park-and-ride lots. For attendees staying in downtown Austin hotels, the shuttle is almost always the better option — you avoid driving to COTA entirely, skip all parking hassle, and the dedicated shuttle lanes cut through traffic faster than general traffic on race day.

Shuttle details change year to year — always check the official COTA website for current shuttle routes, pickup locations, and pricing for the specific race year. They typically run dedicated routes from downtown hotels, Austin-Bergstrom Airport, and several suburban park-and-ride locations.

Rideshare to COTA

Uber and Lyft both operate at COTA during race weekend, with designated drop-off and pickup zones. Getting there by rideshare works well — drivers are familiar with the routes. Getting home is the problem: surge pricing after the race can push fares to $80–150 for a downtown Austin trip. If you rideshare in, plan to either pay surge, wait 1–2 hours for it to drop, or walk to a further pickup point.

Staying Near COTA

Hotels near the COTA exit (east Austin, airport corridor, Bastrop area) fill up for race weekend but offer a completely different experience: short drive to the venue, easy parking, minimal traffic. If you're coming from out of town, staying east of Austin can make the whole weekend dramatically less stressful than fighting hotel availability and traffic from downtown.

Pre-Book COTA Parking

COTA's official parking sells out for race weekend, often weeks in advance. SpotHero and COTA's own booking system both offer advance purchase options. If you're driving, buy parking before October — don't assume you'll find it day-of.
