SXSW is unlike any other Austin event because it doesn't happen in one place — it spreads across the entire downtown core, from the Convention Center to 6th Street to Red River to East Austin. That actually makes parking both harder and easier than a single-venue festival: harder because "near SXSW" doesn't mean one thing, easier because there are more parking options spread across a wider area.
SXSW Parking: The Core Strategy
The single most effective SXSW parking approach is to park once and walk (or scooter) everywhere for the day. SXSW Austin is compact enough that walking between venues is genuinely normal — badge holders log serious miles at SXSW. Pick a central garage, secure your car, and forget about it until you're heading home.
Best Garages for SXSW Central Base
- Austin Convention Center Garage: The official venue garage. Expect Convention Center validation for badge holders at some events. Walk to virtually every core SXSW venue. $3/hr, $25 max — worth it if you're doing a full day.
- Republic Square Garage: Slightly cheaper, equally central. Great for accessing 2nd Street venues and the 6th Street corridor. $2/hr, $15 max weekdays.
- 6th & Brazos area garages: Put you right in the heart of the entertainment district. Fill up fast on peak SXSW nights (Thursday–Saturday).
SXSW Week vs. SXSW Weekend
SXSW Film/Interactive week (Monday–Wednesday): Parking is significantly more manageable. Garages have space, street parking is available in the fringe zones. This is when Austin tech/film people attend; crowds are big but not concert-big.
SXSW Music weekend (Thursday–Saturday): This is when 100,000+ people converge on downtown Austin. Treat this exactly like the busiest night of the year for downtown parking — because it is. Budget for a garage, arrive early, and have a backup.
If you're attending SXSW multiple days, some garages and private lots sell week-long or monthly SXSW passes in advance. These can be dramatically cheaper per-day than walk-up rates during the event. Check SpotHero in January/February for monthly options near the Convention Center.
East Austin During SXSW
A lot of SXSW Music action has moved to Red River Cultural District and East 6th. If your shows are on that side:
- East 6th side streets (past I-35) still have free and cheap parking even during SXSW
- The walk from east of I-35 to Red River venues is 10 minutes
- This is legitimately one of the best-kept SXSW parking secrets — most visitors don't think to go east
Residential Permit Zones: Read Every Sign
Austin significantly expands residential permit enforcement around downtown during SXSW. Streets that are normally fine to park on may have temporary "SXSW No Parking" signs or permit-only restrictions. Always read every sign on a block before you walk away. Tow trucks are very active during festival week.
Getting Around Without Moving Your Car
Once parked, Austin's SXSW infrastructure is walkable:
- Walk: Most venues are within 1 mile of the Convention Center
- Scooter: Bird/Lime scooters everywhere; $2–5 between venues
- Rideshare: Surge pricing is brutal during SXSW Music weekend — budget $20–30 for a single downtown trip at peak times
- Walk + free shows: SXSW outdoor stages and free shows are scattered everywhere; you don't need transportation if you stay central
For Austin Locals: Your Coping Strategy
If you live in Austin and are attending some SXSW events, the locals' trick is to use your normal neighborhood parking and take transit/scooter in. Park at home in your own neighborhood, scooter or rideshare to the first venue, and rideshare home at the end (accepting the surge price as the cost of not driving).
Reserve SXSW Parking in Advance
SpotHero sells out of prime SXSW parking spots weeks in advance. If you're planning to drive for any SXSW events, check SpotHero in February for advance pricing — it's significantly cheaper than anything you'll find walking up during the event.
