One of the most common complaints about the official Park ATX app is that people can't find their zone number or understand how zones relate to meter rates. This map is our attempt to fix that with a clear, interactive overview of how Austin's parking zones work.

Austin Parking Zones Explained
Austin's downtown parking is divided into zones based on proximity to the core and demand level. The closer to the heart of downtown, the higher the zone number and the higher the rate.
| Zone | Area | Rate | Enforcement Hours | Max Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zone 1 | Core Downtown (Congress, 6th-2nd) | $1.50–$2.00/hr | Mon–Sat 8am–10pm | 2 hours |
| Zone 2 | Downtown Fringe (outer downtown blocks) | $1.00–$1.50/hr | Mon–Sat 8am–8pm | 2–4 hours |
| Zone 3 | Near East / Rainey / South Congress fringe | $0.75–$1.25/hr | Mon–Sat 8am–6pm | 4 hours |
| Zone 4 | Extended — outer neighborhoods | $0.50–$0.75/hr | Mon–Fri 8am–6pm | Varies |
Austin uses demand-responsive pricing, which means rates can vary by block and time of day within the same general zone. The rates above are representative — your specific meter may differ. Always check the kiosk or Park ATX app for the actual current rate at your exact location.
How to Find Your Zone Number
Here's the thing about the Park ATX app that frustrates everyone: finding your specific zone number. Here's how to do it reliably:
- Look at the meter kiosk: Every Austin parking kiosk has a zone number printed on it, usually near the top or on the front panel.
- Look at the parking sign on the pole: Many Austin parking signs include zone information. Look for text like "Zone 1" or "Meter Zone" on the green signs.
- Use the kiosk directly: You can pay at any kiosk with a credit card without needing the app. Enter the space number (also printed on the sign), select your time, and pay. No zone hunting required.
Parking Payment Options
Pay at the Kiosk
Every metered zone has green kiosks that accept credit cards. Walk to the nearest kiosk (you don't need to find the one closest to your car — any kiosk in the zone works), enter your license plate or space number, select your time, and pay. Print the receipt and display it on your dash if instructed (some zones require this; most don't).
Pay via the Park ATX App
The City of Austin's official parking app. Allows you to pay remotely and extend your time from your phone. Once you know your zone number, the app is genuinely convenient. The frustration most users have is finding that zone number the first time.
Free Meter Days
Austin suspends meter enforcement on these holidays — street parking is free all day:
- New Year's Day (January 1)
- Independence Day (July 4)
- Labor Day (first Monday in September)
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day (December 25)
All other holidays — including Memorial Day and MLK Day — meters are enforced normally. Don't assume a federal holiday means free parking; only the specific city holidays listed above are typically waived.
Parking Garages vs. Street Meters
For stays over 2 hours downtown, garages almost always make more sense than street meters because:
- No 2-hour time limit to stress about
- Daily maximums cap your cost (usually $15–25)
- No risk of a ticket if you lose track of time
- Often comparable cost for longer visits
Use street meters for quick errands (under 90 minutes). Use garages for anything longer.
