South Congress Avenue — SoCo to anyone who's lived in Austin more than a week — is the city's most iconic strip. Allen Boots, Lucy in Disguise, Güero's, the Continental Club. It's the Austin that Austin wants to be. It's also got a parking situation that swings between totally fine (weekday mornings) and absolutely maddening (Saturday afternoon First Thursday).
Here's how to navigate it.
Street Parking on South Congress
South Congress Avenue itself has metered parking along the strip. The good news: meters here are less expensive than downtown and enforcement is lighter.
| Location | Rate | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Congress Ave (main strip) | $1.00–1.50/hr | Mon–Sat 8am–6pm |
| Cross streets (side) | Free or $0.50/hr | Varies |
| Residential side streets | Free (check signs) | N/A |
Side Streets: The SoCo Secret Reserve →
The residential side streets one or two blocks east and west of Congress Ave are where locals park. Streets like Juanita, Elizabeth, and Annie have free street parking that's almost always available except during First Thursday. The walk back to the strip is 2–4 minutes. This is the move.
Turn east on Elizabeth Street or Annie Street and find free residential parking one block off Congress. It's a 2–3 minute walk back to the strip. You'll never pay for SoCo parking again.
First Thursday: Different Rules
First Thursday (the first Thursday evening of each month) is SoCo's unofficial street festival. Shops stay open late, there's music, food trucks, and the whole strip gets packed. On these nights, the free side streets fill up fast and even meters get contested. Arrive by 6pm to get a good spot, or use rideshare — Uber/Lyft drop-off on Congress Ave is easy.
Parking Lots Near SoCo
There are a few small private lots along the strip, mostly behind restaurants. Many restaurants (Güero's, etc.) have their own lots that get full on busy evenings. There's no large public garage on South Congress — it's not that kind of street. The side streets are really your best bet.
South Lamar Overflow
If you're at the SoCo/South Lamar intersection area, the South Lamar corridor has more parking options including some commercial lots. For the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar, there's a dedicated lot plus street parking on nearby side streets.
Getting to SoCo Without Parking
From downtown, the Congress Avenue Bridge walk is genuinely pleasant — about 15 minutes on foot from the 2nd Street District to the heart of SoCo. Many people park downtown in a garage and walk over, especially in good weather. Bird/Lime scooters from downtown to SoCo take about 5 minutes and cost $2–3.
Best Time to Park on SoCo
- Weekday mornings: Easy, meters available everywhere, side streets free
- Weekend afternoons (not First Thursday): Side streets work, arrive before noon for best options
- First Thursday evenings: Plan for rideshare or arrive before 6pm
- Saturday evenings: Side streets still workable before 7pm, then meters or rideshare
