ACL Fest is one of the largest music festivals in the country, and it happens right in the middle of Austin at Zilker Park. Two weekends in October, 75,000+ attendees per day, and one of Austin's busiest road corridors (Barton Springs Road / MoPac) serving as the main artery in and out. Parking without a plan is a recipe for a bad time.

Here's what actually works.

The Hard Truth About Driving to ACL

Let's start here: driving directly to Zilker Park and parking nearby is the worst way to get to ACL. The roads around Zilker get gridlocked. The lots adjacent to the park fill by 10am. You will sit in traffic. The fest doesn't get good until afternoon anyway — there's no reason to arrive before the crowds thin out... except most people do anyway.

The locals' strategy: park somewhere reasonable and take a shuttle, rideshare, bike, or scooter the last mile or two. It sounds like extra steps but in practice it's faster and less stressful than fighting festival traffic.

Official ACL Festival Shuttle Lots

ACL typically operates shuttle service from several remote lots around Austin. These are the most stress-free option:

ℹ️ Official shuttle locations change year to year. Always check the ACL Fest website for current shuttle lot details for the specific festival year.

Free Parking + Walk/Bike/Scooter Strategy

This is the move that experienced Austin ACL-goers use every year:

South Austin Residential (Best Option)

Park for free in the residential neighborhoods south of Zilker — streets like Kinney Ave, Zennia, Lightsey, and similar in the 78704 zip code. These streets have free, unrestricted parking. From here, the walk to Zilker is 15–25 minutes, or a 5-minute Bird scooter ride. You avoid every bit of festival traffic.

South Congress / Bouldin Creek

Park on SoCo-adjacent residential streets and walk or scooter north to the park. Similar distance, similar experience. The SoCo strip has good restaurants for a pre-fest meal too.

Bike It In

If you're staying anywhere within 3–4 miles of Zilker, biking is genuinely the best ACL transport. There are bike valet areas at the festival gates. Austin's relatively flat topography makes this more viable than most cities. Bike share (MetroBike) is available throughout the area.

🚴 The ACL Bike Trick

Rent or use your own bike, ride to the festival, use the free bike valet at the gate. Skip all car traffic, skip parking, skip rideshare surge pricing. This is genuinely how Austin locals do ACL. The bike valet is free and well-managed.

Rideshare Pickup/Drop-Off

ACL has designated rideshare zones — direct drop-off right at the festival entrance. This works great for arriving, less great for leaving (post-show surge pricing is real, and everyone leaves at the same time). Best rideshare strategy: Uber/Lyft in, bike or walk out to a side street before calling a ride home.

Parking Near Zilker: What's Actually Available

Barton Springs Pool Lot

The lot at Barton Springs Pool is one of the closest to the festival entrance. It fills by 9–10am on festival days. Arrive before 9am or don't count on it. Standard city parking rates apply when it's not reserved for festival use.

Stratford Drive Area

Streets north of Zilker (Stratford, Azie Morton, etc.) have some street parking that doesn't fill as fast as the immediate park perimeter. Still a solid walk to the gates but manageable.

What to Avoid

Weekend 1 vs. Weekend 2 Differences

Both weekends draw similar crowds, but Weekend 1 (earlier in October) tends to be hotter, which means more people drive. Weekend 2 is usually cooler and sees slightly more bikers and walkers. The strategies are the same either way — plan ahead.

Pre-Book Parking for ACL

SpotHero and other platforms sell pre-reserved festival parking spots in private lots and garages near Zilker. These sell out weeks in advance for ACL. If you're committed to driving, book your spot before September.
